the beginning of the school year for thousands of students in montgomery county. roll call could break a record. >> enrollment expected to surge. administrators will keep an eye out if that plus the health of students out there as well. >> we expect somewhere between 1,002,000 kids who are entering our doors who were in private school last year. >> a lot of those private school students are in public schools this year in large part due to the economy and also school officials will be keeping a close watch on what happens with the swine flu because they do want to prevent an outbreak in the school system this year. now, to a fox 5 follow-up. they started school last week but today may feel like the first day for some students in prince george's county. >> a scheduling mix-up left them without class. many spent the first week sitting in the auditorium. as of saturday night, 100 students still didn't have permanent schedules.

they promised that would be fixed tut. police are searching for whomever shot an killed a man over the weekend. 63-year-old clarence rankin was gunned down in his own yard yesterday morning. witnesses say there was a group of people playing dominos and there may have been an argument erovermoney. police found a handgun but they aren't sure who it belongs to. police are investigating the death of a woman in columbia heights. 48-year-old deborah ann brown was walking down the street when somebody opened fire. she was taken to medstar hospital where she was pronounced dead. the man accused of the deadly shooting inside the holocaust memorial museum back in june is expected to be arraigned this week.

a and jury indicted james von brunn on seven counts. you are looking at senator ted kennedy's grave site which rests on the hillside at arlington national cemetery alongside his brothers. the cemetery closed access at noon on sunday so the senator's wife, vicki could have some private time at his grave. senator kennedy was considered the rock of his family and in some ways the senate. now, there are questions over the fate of his greatest cause, health care reform. >> his family talked about his life and triumphs. >> he himself knew pain, struggle, abandonment. >> if you want it honor teddy' memory, it is to come back and sort of, as i said the other night, put behind us the blistering days of august and to enter the cool days of september and start acting like senators again. >> congress return

wildfire in los angeles county. smoke and ash threatens homes and air quality. two firefighters died when their vehicle rolled o a mountain side as they battled the scorching flames and several home have already been charred. the fire looks like it is headed to an area that is home to transmitters for major television and radio station. aa disturbing new twist in an 18-year-old murder case. california authorities believe the man they say abducted jaycee dugard back in 1991 may also be a murderer. investigators have been gathering evidence from the home of philip garrido. he and hi wife were arrested last week acussed of kidnapping the now 29-year-old when she was 11 and holding her captive in their home. police are looking for evidence linking garrido to several prostitute murders. dick cheney is accusing the obama administration for playing politics in questioning whether cia interrogators abused suspects.

cool, 70 degrees. partly sunny. cool start to the day. sunrise this morning at 6:36. not expecting much in the way of rain showers. by this afternoon, most of the area should be filled with lots of sunshine so it should be a nice afternoon here as we've got some changes, big-time changes here in the forecast. 66 at reagan national. 64 at dulles. 61 in frederick and others there in hagerstown. great looking start off to the north and west. underneath the cloud cover, it is 68 now. and 73 at this moment in ocean city, maryland. i mentioned the area of low pressure off it our south and our east. you can see the rain showers now getting their act together towards richmond and pushing off the coast here. we'll continue to watch this move on off to the east. an area of high pressure that is up across the great lakes will start to move in and that is going to deliver not just nice weather this afternoon but for the entire workweek. we are going to have a great looking couple of days around here.

an easy ride whether you are heading over to the pentagon parking lot or in the hov lanes continuing over to the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. a consumer aher. kansas city star newspaper reports that enterprise rent-a- car chose money over your safety on the road. paper saysenter price ordered thousands of cars wiout side air bags. enterprise stood by its decision saying the safety feature is not yet required by law. move saved e nterprise $11.5 million. a lot of college students may have more on their minds than just exams. campus as cross the country are prepping for outbreaks of swine flu after the world health organization washed that it could spread quickly in the next few months. some schools are setting up on- line classes as plan b. fox's peter deucey has the story. >> reporter: they are among the most vulnerable group of people

to an h1n1 outbreak, college students. over 18 million of them nationwide. they live in crowded dorms, gather in classrooms an eat together in dinge halls putting them at high risk. administrators hope education and awareness will prevent widespread illness. but if that doesn't work, many schools have a high-tech plan b. >> an amazing system where they can shift completely to on-line teaching to the undergraduate population. so in this case, if someone has access to the computer and they are otherwise well but they are stuck from going to class because we have had to shut down classes, they can continue with their learning. >> reporter: it is called distance learning or e- learning. classrooms have been wired so if the campus is closed or sick students can't get to class, the classroom can be brought to the student. you can on-line educational proms like black board and college kids can keep up with their chass. >> you would see the lecture

notes. you would see any discussion forums that are going on about that lecture. you would see your assignments. could take an on-line test. >> reporter: the centers for disease control recently added 19 to 24-year-olds to the first priority group for the hub vaccine. with the vaccine not expected to believe available until late october, students feel safe knowing if their campus is shut down, they can still log on. >> i would be more relieved and comforting to know that drexel has a system set up for this because the 109-week quarters, if you miss a day of class, you are really far behind. >> that would be pretty i woulhead dd n the shore and do my classes on-line. it would be like a vacation while still doing work. >> reporter: peter deucey, fox news. now to the battle over the nation's health care system. without the help of senator kennedy, the battle for reform could seem steeper.

as caroline shively explains, democrats may need to change their strategy. >> reporter: the together of ted kennedy could dramatically change the fight for health care reform for two reasons. one being he has been leading the charge for reform for four decades but for another, they have fallen below the 60-vote majority. they may have to use senatorial maneuvering for a simple majority. after the week, harry reid said if he can't get a bipartisan bill through, he'll go partisan. rub orrin hatch tells abc that lawmaker can learn a lot from kennedy. >> he could bring together all of the base groups of the democratic party. they wouldn't take him on once he made up his mind. >> reporter: but kennedy had something that most members some the senate don't have. he could afford to wait. he didn't have to worry about attacks from e left. >> ted kennedy had at built and the knowledge to get into a

senator ted kennedy is now laid to rest on a hillside at arlington national cemetery. senator kennedy was buried at arlington on saturday just days after losing his bat we'll bain cancer at the age of 77. >> crowds flocked to the grave site over weekend to pay respects to the man would many say had a profound effect toon potics. fox 5's stacy cohan was there and take a closer look. >> reporter: a simple cross marks final resting place of a man with a complicated life. at the foot of the hill lies

senator edward kennedy. a small array of flower visitors adorn the grave site. far more arrived too late to approach the site which chosed at noon. but many stayed and stared and snapped photos, even from a distance. >> teddy endured so much and gave so much to this country and the world is really not nearly as good a place without him. >> reporter: some here are locals, some tourists who just happened to be in washington this week. earl zeibls with a kennedy constituent. >> he had served briefly apparently as a private first ass in the united states army just like i did. so i felt we had something in common there. >> reporter: there are more than 3 town 3 -- 300,000 people buried at the arlington national cemetery. aside from the tunnel of the unknown soldier,le hillside where the den can is are buried is one of the cemetery's most visited sites. in the coming weeks, the cemetery expects more mourners from across the nation to pay

the screen there. a cool start to the day. 66degrees. welcome back to work and say good-bye to august. >> back to school for all the youngsters in montgomery county as well. >> a big school day. the weather is fitting just perfectly with the back to school theme. it is noticeably cooler than it has been the last several days. noticeably less humid as well. we'll start with the currents. we'll have highs only in the 70s. 66 now at reagan national. humidity, 56%. both of those are way down from where they were friday, saturday and sunday. winds are out of north 1 miles per hour. kind after mixed bag to tart the day. f to the south and east of w us, we've got light rain showers. this radar is, for all intents and purposes, overdoing it here in washingtoe seyou might a see here in town. south and eas a better chance of beseeing some

virginia runs without incident between annandale and merrifield. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. we're following a developing story out west where the battle against a wildfire in california has taken a deadly turn. officials say two firefighters died when their vehicle rolled off a mountain side while fighting a massive blaze north of los angeles. the fire has now consumed 66 square miles, destroyed at least 18 buildings and is threatening at least 1,000 homes. california's governor had this warning. >> this is a huge and very dangerous fire. fire is moving very close to homes and to structures. want to urge everyone living near any of the fires, please

listen and followhe evacuation orders from local officials. >> officials say the air quality in parts of state are borderline hazardous now and that about is 2,000 firefighters that are battling the blaze around the clock. very soon, hundreds of thousands of students are going to pour into the halls of schools across montgomery county. besides new faces, swine flu is expected to make an appearance. fox 5's sarah simmons is live from gaithersburg with more on the first day of school an also the efforts to fight the flu. >> reporter: that's right. 140,000 students is the record that are expected to come back to school in montgomery county today. part of that record-breaking number is due in part because of the economy. school officials are saying that a lot of parents are just trying to cut back on how much cash they spend and have perhaps even lost their jobs in this tough economy, pulled their kids out of pride school and put them into public school. schools will be packed this

year more than usual. the district held a tremor general cinemas station party for students at walt whitman high in bethesda. some of the students are a little never nervous because again, this is the first year in a public versus a private school. but school officials seem to think the largest system in maryland can handle the extra kids. now, the bigger concern is that the schools can handle an h1n1 outbreak. parents and school officials say they're concerned about that. >> i have a child had college who yesterday was diagnosed with the flu test and tested positive and she only began college last wednesday and is already sick. >> i'm sending in their lunches a little wipe that come in the individual packets so they can wipe their hands before they t >> reporter: now, school officials will be watching students and to see if any appear ill. the other thing they are going to be monitoring is the absentee trends, be looking at

that as well. in the end, it wi still be the health department that is going to make the determination of whether or not a swine flu outbreak is going to be enough to close down a school temporarily to deal with that issue. back to you. >> thank you. after nearly a week of sitting in the auditorium or temporary classes, students in princeeorge's county should get their permanent schedules today, a week after school started. this is the word from the superintendent. tr. william hite said staff worked throughout the weekend to fix the scheduling problem. he blamed it on a new computer program and human error. a community is stunned over the death of a beloved neighbor. 63-year-old collar enrankin was gunned down yesterday morning, shot multiple times in his own front yard. police found a handgun but are not sure who it belongs to and haven't pinpointed a motive. d.c. police are vehicling the kill be of a woman in

middle 70s. we are starting the day off with cloud covervehius just enoh ves just enough of a mood change that it feels like fall. heax mis d radar. we do have showers. before a couple of showers to talk about. not going to be a big deal in waous th you ousouth and stea, east, you can see that through most of the showers, the concentrated activity. it will continue to rain down here for the next few hours as we watch an area of low pressure start to develop here along the carolinas. here in washington, just fine. couple of showers just off to the south and west down towards charlottesville. it is possible weould see a brief shower during the morning hours. the best chance will be south and east down toward leonardtown, st. mary's city. again, we'll watch this get off the coast. i'll show you the reason why you have the showers in the neighborhood and the reason why is an area of low pressure developing here. remember the frontal system that came through during the weekend that has been bringing the cooler and drier air. it is hanging up just to our

south and east this morning. that has been responsible for spawning an area of low pressure here that will drag the energy off coast today. off to the north and west, high pressure will deliver sunshine by afternoon. we'll start the day with cloudiness out there and then i think later this afternoon, you will see more and more sun and a decreasing chance of a sprinkle or shower here in washington. actually, the forecast only gets better from here. 66 now so it is cooler than it has been. 64 in baltimore. 59 in hagerstown. so there is cooler weather and the wind are out of the north as well so not only is it cooler but it is a lot drier. the atmosphere getting dried out. this is our latest tropical disturbance. it is that time of year where we'll reach the peak of hurricane season in another 10 days or so. you can see the hurricane cent are is convinced they this will become a tropical depression. you can see it is looking more and more impressive here on our satellite-radar with some thunderstorm activity starting to bubble up. this will become tropical depression number five.
